This S.M.L.E rifle butt plate and oiler came by way of a trade with a private collector in Canakkale, Turkey. We exchanged some items for a small collection of relics that were found in the Gallipoli Peninsula after a large forest fire a number of years ago.
We researched the number on the oiler and traced it to a Pte James Inglis who served in B Company, 7th Battalion of the Royal Scots Regiment. He was killed on the 28th June 1915 aged 26 and is remembered on the Helles Memorial in Gallipoli.
There were several War dead with the number 346, However we could only find 1 that fell in Gallipoli, so are quite confident this once belonged to him.
