Trench art is the name given to articles of war that that been turned into an ornamental object.
They were not normally made in the trenches, but some items do exist that had been cast in the mud from melted down shrapnel balls or carvings from chalk etc. Trench art can be as modern as the latest conflict and normally serve as a memento of their conflict.
A lot of trench art was made by P.O.W’s for extra rations and by recovering wounded soldiers who needed the therapy. A Company was set up after WW1 making trench art items from the mass of Battlefield debris left behind, which helped the veterans back to work and a profit for the company.
This letter opener has been made from an INERT French 8 x 50 mm Lebel rifle bullet and brass from an artillery cannon shell case.
The dedication is to the “Balkans”
