When the 1942 model helmet went into production, Germany was fighting nearly on every front. The need for raw materials was imminent. Cut backs were being made where ever they could and the M42 was no exception. There was no longer a rolled edge along the rim and the steel was of a lower grade. They came in 2 colours, slate grey for the Heer & blue grey for the Luftwaffe with only 1 decal. However by the end of 1943 all helmets came in just slate grey to eliminate the need for another production line, and decals were no longer applied either.
This helmet is a typical post 1943 variant in slate grey workshop painted in Normandy camouflage colours. There is a heating lot number stamped on the rear skirt but no makers mark. This indicates that it was probably made by Emaillerwerke AG, Fulda or Vereinigte Deutsche Nickelwerke AG, Schwerte as they both used P.O.W slave labour in their factories and are renowned for producing lesser quality goods with missing stamps. The heating lot stamp was required by German law, and would not be passed for combat use without it.
So without a shadow of a doubt this helmet is a genuine late war M42 helmet. The interior has the standard slate grey paint, while the outer paint is workshop sprayed in all the correct colours.
I am more than happy that the Normandy cam paint is of the period, However I will let you come to your own conclusion. There is nothing like holding the item in your hands or showing some like minded friends before you make that final decision. This is why we offer a 14 day period in which you can return the helmet for any reason for a full refund (less return postage) providing the the helmet is returned in the same condition it was sent.
